Alabaster

Cairo / Misr El-qadima

The Abdelrahman Family Workshop has specialized in Alabaster making since the 1970s, in Luxor, Egypt, and currently residing in Old Egypt. They have been working in this profession passing through six generations. At their workshop, raw alabaster arrives in massive rock form, awaiting its transformation into refined home decor pieces destined to give authenticity to your table. With skillful precision, the Abdelrahman brothers and their team cut, lathe, carve, and polish the slightly translucent stone, each piece bearing its unique marbling. Keeping tradition alive, The Abdelrahmans still craft their wares in the very workshop just a stone's throw away from the majestic Ancient Pharaonic Valley of the Kings. However, with tourism shrinking in Luxor, Ali and his brother sought out new opportunities for their graceful creations. They decided to relocate to Cairo and establish a new workshop there. The Abdelrahmans and Fair Trade Egypt decided to collaborate in 2009. With both parties having the urge to preserve traditional handicrafts, we set the intention to do so, and achievements have been happening since then. Fair Trade Egypt helped the group experience the making of designs that they usually weren’t doing, we also succeeded in helping their products to be exported abroad.
