Marmar workshop is located in Al-Qouranah village, within Luxor, Egypt. A home to a craft nearly 300 years old that continues to this day. The workshop specializes in marmar, a process that requires patience and precision, as artisans select the raw material, prepare it, and carve it into its final form entirely by hand. Each artisan is taught directly by the one who mastered the craft before him, a method that has helped the workshop maintain a level of skill recognized throughout the village. The team currently consists of 7 skilled male artisans, each contributing to different stages of the process, from shaping to finishing. Since 2016, Fair Trade Egypt and Am Mohamed have been working together, committed to preserving a traditional craft at risk of fading, supporting artisans from marginalized communities, and maintaining a consistently high standard of product quality. This collaboration has allowed the group to continue practicing their craft while gaining access to wider markets, ensuring that both the tradition and the people behind it are sustained for years to come.
