North Sinai / Al Arish - Bir El Abd - Shiekh Zowayed

Souq El Khamees Association was established in 1999 in Al-Arish, Sinai, Egypt. Specializing in Bedouin clothing and accessories, the association preserves traditional craftsmanship through unique handmade designs inspired by age-old motifs and intricate beadwork. The patterns and techniques used mirror those found on the wedding dresses and festive garments of young Bedouin women. This initiative empowers 40 Bedouin women from isolated villages in North Sinai, providing them with a platform to showcase their rich heritage, skills, and artistry. Despite cultural norms that traditionally discouraged women from working outside their homes, these artisans have defied expectations, passionately pursuing their craft and creating opportunities for themselves. Since partnering with Fair Trade Egypt in 2003, the association has gained access to competitive markets, ensuring sustainable income for its artisans. Beyond economic empowerment, this collaboration has fostered personal and professional growth through training, literacy programs, and skill development. As we continue this transformative journey, we remain committed to expanding opportunities and achieving even greater success.
